Dakereon Joyner was one of the most promising high school quarterbacks in the country when he committed to play for the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2018. The dual-threat quarterback was expected to compete for the starting job as a freshman, but he struggled to adjust to the college game and eventually lost the job to fellow freshman Ryan Hilinski.
Joyner appeared in just four games as a freshman, completing 5 of 12 passes for 39 yards and rushing for 31 yards on nine carries. He played sparingly in 2020, appearing in five games and completing 6 of 10 passes for 39 yards and rushing for 41 yards on 17 carries.
Despite his limited playing time, Joyner remained optimistic about his future with the Gamecocks. He told reporters in December 2020 that he planned to stay at South Carolina and compete for the starting job in 2021.
